Onyema reacted after influencer and businesswoman Ife Agoro criticised men calling for capital punishment for Clancy, who allegedly killed her three children while suffering from postpartum psychosis.
Clancy is currently facing trial in the United States after allegedly strangling her children — five-year-old Cora, three-year-old Dawson and eight-month-old Callan — at their family home in Duxbury, Massachusetts.
While weighing in on the debate, Onyema questioned whether society would show the same understanding if a man had committed a similar crime and attributed his actions to post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
“If a man killed his three children, would we blame PTSD?” Onyema asked, arguing that men and women should be subjected to the same standard when discussing violent crimes and mental health.
His comment has since added another dimension to the online debate, with social media users weighing in on whether mental illness should influence public opinion and sentencing in cases involving the death of children.
